Vivian Romero’s work is her environment, thoughts, and feelings. Based in Oakland, California, Vivian paints small abstract urban and natural landscapes in acrylic on paper. She plans an idea or symbol she wants to work with, uses a minimal palette to focus on nuance and subtlety, and the application is more intuitive and gestural. The layers of paint serve as a metaphor for the layers of thoughts and feelings in her bodymind that are derived from the idea. She works with what is seen, heard, or felt on a conscious level, and that will signal a response sometimes from the unconscious- that will then give the piece expression. Ultimately Vivian is working to have an experience – a calming of the nerves, a new way of thinking, questions may arise…some kind of transformation. This process is repetitive and cyclical - working, reworking, reemerging and hopefully, renewed.
